Ahhh!! I've been modeling for so long. From the time I got home from lab (well a little after - I played La Pucelle for maybe 30-45 minutes) until Video Game Club, and then from after Chris and I left around 10 to 1:30 last night, I've been working on my face model for my elf! And then this morning after I ate breakfast around 10 I've been working on it, this is my progress:

(FYI this was created using Hash Animation Master 2003, a spline-based modeling program)

It's been a lot of work and it doesn't really look like much (yes many of you are probably like "THAT took her that much time??" If you've never modeled before it does look like that! But really, it's a lot of work. If I didn't spend as much time as I did on it, I probably would have broken spline rules and her face would be REALLY lumpy, it's a little bad around the chin-area (might not be apparent in this picture, not sure) but I still have a lot of work to do on it anyways :( but this is good, it's due wednesday and I've done a lot :D hopefully this weekend I can get even more done, maybe finish it, since it's due Wednesday and it would be nice to not have to worry about it (and maybe show it to Alex or Jasper to ask if there's anything else I should do...)

Ok time to take a shower and stuff :D

Not sure how similar it is, but I remember doing some AutoCAD a couple years ago, and it was tough just to draw boxes and such. So this is pretty damn good. And the chin doesn't look wierd or bad or anything at all.

Good job :)

WOW! O_O

Modelling is hard shit to do. Will you post the finished model when you're done? Also, will you skin the model?

Sure, I don't mind posting it when I'm done :)

After asking Chris what "skinning" was, he told me that that's something you do in polygon based modeling as opposed to spline based. We'll learn how to texture the skin and whatnot... I think in a different class (in the art department rather than the comp sci) I'll learn polygon-based modeling, skinning, and Maya and whatnot :D

Now I'm even more curious, how do you apply texture to a model in a spline based modelling system? I've never used one, so for me, this is pretty much a new concept. I've used 3D Studio Max 5.0 and Maya 4 Unlimited, but I never bothered to model something big (I'm not as good at arts as I'd like to be). All this talk of modelling makes me want to install Max and Maya again.

For right now, I've only had one class on it, so it's a little hard for me to explain. You apply things called "materials" to your object which I'm pretty sure use alpha channels to decide how much "texture" an object has for light/dark, and you also can apply decals to objects, but rather than wrap around an object they are directly placed flat against it, so it only really works on flatter surfaces... you might be able to find a tutorial online that would explain it more :) hash.com has some interesting ones, I've never really had the time to fully look through them, but it might be a good place to look in your free time if you're curious :) otherwise i can maybe try to talk about it more after this week :)

It's very good caitlin, and it's obvious where you're going with it. Do they teach giving it a skin though? Most game companys now don't go that far into detail, models like that are wicked space consuming, more so on console games than pc. Skins are nice because you can make a simple face and than add better shape to it by appling the skin, but you probably already know that. :P

I know zero about 3D modeling, but that looks really cool :)
